Bath Spa Students’ Union is led by students for students. It is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation and registered with the Charity Commission (registration number 1189547).

As a student-led organisation, Bath Spa students are central to both the Union’s governance and democratic structures as shown in this handy diagram.

As a student at Bath Spa and a member of the Students’ Union, you have a variety of opportunities to use your voice to influence the work of your Union and share your ideas.

Our charitable aims are:

  • Providing social, cultural, sporting and other recreational activities, as well as forums for discussion and debate for the personal development of our students.
  • To act as the recognised representative between students, Bath Spa University, and other external bodies.
  • Representing, supporting, and advising students on a range of subjects.
  • Promoting the interests and welfare of our students during your course of study at Bath Spa University.

The Union’s Constitution sets out charitable aims and much of our guidelines of how we must work as a Union. It is a governing document.

You may read the constitution here.

The Constitution is supported by a number of bylaws, which provide the detail on how the Students’ Union should be correctly governed.

At the heart of how the Union works are a set of values:

  • Students are at the centre of everything that we do.
  • We have many voices, but we are one Union. We achieve great things together.
  • We are creative, innovative and responsive to the constantly changing needs of our students.
  • We take pride in delivering high-quality services, opportunities and value for money.
  • Trust, sustainability and accountability are at the heart of how we work.

We expect every officer, representative, trustee and staff member to demonstrate these common values through being:

  • Ambitious, passionate, dedicated, committed and motivated.
  • Team oriented, respecting colleges and valuing them equally.
  • Professional and able to take responsibility.
  • Empowering, willing and able to provide help and support.

Our role at the Students’ Union is to empower Bath Spa students and help them make the most of their University experience.

We set out our aims in the BIG PLAN 2016-2020. This was developed following extensive consultation with students and partners. It contained 6 key priorities. These were:

  • Communication, research and engagement
  • Community
  • Well-being
  • Activities
  • Skills development
  • Student voice

We are currently developing a New Strategy to guide our work over the next 2 years.

Annual Report

As a registered charity, the Union is required to have its accounts audited each year and produce an annual report.

The report is required to be submitted annually to the Charity Commission and must follow the Statement of Recommended Practice (SORP) framework.

Our Auditors are:

Burton Sweet, The Clock Tower, 5 Farleigh Court, Old Weston Road, Flax Bourton, Bristol, BS48 1UR

The All Student Members Meeting is where all major decisions about the future direction of the Union are made.

All students are invited to attend.

It is also where students may hold their elected Officers and the Board of Trustees to account by asking questions and learning about how they have been implementing their election pledges to students.

The next All Student Members Meeting will be on 25th February 2021.

We want to ensure that the Students’ Union is an organisation its members are proud of, that staff and officers are proud to work in and that our partners are proud to be associated with.

This means we endeavour to be an organisation that people want to work for, are proud to work for and enjoy being a part of.

We have a number of documents and policies in place to support these ambitions:

The Staff Handbook gives you an overview of working for the Union and introduces the role of the following policies and procedures. These documents show how we are meeting our statutory obligations and how we strive to be a responsible and supportive employer:
