Information For Organisations

Working with student volunteers from Bath Spa University

Student volunteers are likely to be keen to work with you. Discover how to make the most of them whilst avoiding common pitfalls…

How can JustV help you?

JustV is your gateway to accessing Bath Spa’s 7000 students and potential volunteers! We’re very proud that over 600 individual students volunteered last year: just think what 600 volunteers could do for your organisation!..

We can:

  • advise on designing your opportunities to be as attractive as possible to the students and promote vacancies to all students
  • target the vacancies to students on particular courses
  • draw particular attention to you through our ‘Opportunity of the week’ boards
  • help with recruitment and selection
  • provide a general induction to volunteers before they start
  • provide recognition to the students through the Certificate in Volunteering Achievement and through the annual Volunteer, Society and Representation Awards.

What Bath Spa can offer in particular?

We have 6 schools of study:

  • School of Art and Design
  • School of Humanities and Cultural Industries
School of Music and Performing Arts
  • School of Science, Society and Management
  • School of Education
    Graduate School

As these schools suggest, our students are creative, practical and enthusiastic. They have a wealth of skills, experience and qualifications which your organisation can tap into. Many are actively looking for ways to put their newly found knowledge into practice.

Making your vacancies appeal:

Timing:
Whilst we recruit throughout the year, we are most likely to find suitable volunteers during the autumn and spring terms. Coursework and exams mean that recruitment during the summer term is unpredictable.
• Autumn Term 3rd October 2011 – 16th December 2011
• Spring Term 9th January 2012 – 30th March 2012
• Summer Term 23rd April 2012 – 22nd June 2012

Make them relevant:
Students love to back up their studies with real life experience, and so if the opportunity provides a link to specific subjects it’s more likely to be popular. The University’s website gives full details of courses, or drop us an email or give us a ring to discuss ways we can tailor/target the opportunity.

Emphasise the benefits:
As well as their studies and making new friends, many students also work part time to help pay their way. This means that volunteering has to compete with many other time pressures. It really helps to emphasise what’s in it for them, such as a chance to work with professionals, specific skills they’ll develop, a chance to see behind the scenes.
