Plagiarism is one of the most susceptible student pit-holes. With two different referencing systems used by different subjects its sometimes difficult to keep up with which is which.
Unfortunately plagiarsing can result in very severe penalties on those students that get caught out.
So what is Plagiarism?
Submitting work that is not your work.
If you submit a piece of work to count towards your grade, and this work is not your own, you are technically stealing and will be penalised.
Failing to reference cited sources
If you fail to accurately acknowledge ideas, views or any material from other sources, you will be accused of plagiarising. The University rarely accepts ignorance as an excuse so be warned.
Double Counting
Although plagiarism is generally defined as stealing someone else’s work and passing it off as your own. You can now be held accountable of plagiarising by stealing your own work. Although this sounds a little oxymoronic, the University will hold you accountable to ‘cheating’ if you re-use previous work without relevant referencing.
Technology is increasing the chances of being detected should you plagiarise:
The University is currently affiliated with TurnitinUK a company which stores hundreds of thousands articles and scans a large amount of the Internet. Furthermore it stores all essays handed in at all Universities in previous years.
What are the Consequences?
Plagiarism is one of the biggest problems that Students get accused of and can have big consequences academically!

Having a module capped at 40%
Being kicked out of University
Officially marked as a cheat
As you can see students can receive severe penalties and there are cases where these are awarded.
